Running From One Success to Another

Denison sophomore Katie Navarre finished ninth at the recent NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, earning second-team All-American honors and posting the best finish in Big Red history.

A pretty good afternoon by anyone's standards. However, Katie was only half-way done with her day.

She went from Hanover to Chicago and represented Serbia as part of a model United Nations conference that had participants from colleges and universities across the country.
"Right after the race, I changed from my running shoes to high heels and business attire."
Katie's resolution that dealt with the environment passed at the conference. Her two extraordinary performances - one in the athletic arena and one in the academic - really speak to the definition of a student-athlete.
"They really kind of go together. There was a lot of preparation to do both. In running, you have to work really hard to see results and it's the same with academics. I guess that's what it means to be a scholar- athlete."
