Why did you choose to attend a

have been playing sports for pretty much my whole life and softball has
become very important to me. I knew I wouldn’t enjoy my college career as much
unless I was playing softball. However, I also believe that focusing on my
academics is very important as well. Division III schools are perfect for
allowing student-athletes to balance academics and athletics and I am currently
getting a great education and I am also able to play my sport.

philosophy of NCAA Div. III? NCAA
Division III aims to give student-athletes the ability to focus on academics as
well as athletics. Student-athletes at the Division III level still train hard
and are still competitive, but we are given the opportunity to be more than
just an athlete. We truly define the term “student-athlete.”

balancing athletics and academics at Denison? My experience has been
great. My coach is very understanding and recognizes the importance of
academics and my professors also recognize the importance of athletics in my
life. At times it is difficult to manage my time, but with all of the support I
receive from coaches and professors I have had a lot of success balancing
athletics and academics.

normal day as a student-athlete at the NCAA Div. III level? I.e. What do you do
all day? All of my classes are in the
morning so softball does not conflict with them as much. I wake up in the
morning and go to class and then I go to work in the Varsity weight room where
I coach other athletes at my school. Then I go to practice or my games. When I
get home I make dinner and do my homework and then get ready for the next day.

she is someone who I look up to and respect greatly. She has experienced tough
times and has developed into a very strong person with a great head on her
shoulders. I would love to learn the things that she has learned. I also would

lot of time on our academics and we do it all without athletic scholarships or
other aid that athletes in other divisions receive.

Name: Kevin Snyder

Hometown/High School: Medina, NY/Medina

Institution: Allegheny College

Majors: Political Science and Communication Arts

Sport: Tennis

• I am originally from ... Medina, NY. It’s a really small town on the Erie Canal in between Buffalo and Rochester.

• Why did you choose to attend a NCAA Division III institution? The chance to play tennis while getting a great education was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. I really valued the small campus at Allegheny as well.

• How would you describe the philosophy of NCAA Div. III? Division III is all about playing for the name on the front of our jerseys. We play our sports because we love practicing and competing, and we also do it because our school, teammates, and friends are important to us. We also realize that academics are our top priority while at college and we treat it as such.

• How has your experience been in balancing athletics and academics Allegheny? It’s not easy, but it is doable. Allegheny is a tough school and in order to do well in the classroom and on the field I’ve had to really maximize my time when I am free, even if that means taking less naps! The professors at Allegheny are supportive of the student-athletes and when I do have to miss class for matches, they understand, but I still have to get the work done.

• How would you best describe your normal day as a student-athlete at the NCAA Div. III level? I.e. What do you do all day? I usually wake up, get some breakfast, and then head to class. After class I work at my work study job in our Office of Student Involvement. After that I either get some homework done or get some extra practice in with my coaches before our team practice. After practice, we usually get dinner as a team and then I head to the library to finish up my homework. Then I repeat.

• Favorite thing about Allegheny? The greatest thing about Allegheny by far is our community. That is something that set it apart from other schools for me. It’s special and when we say “We Are Allegheny,” we mean it. We are one big community and we support each other in the things that we do.

• Favorite thing about the NCAC? The competition of the conference is awesome. Being able to go up against some of the top tennis teams in the country is challenging but great at the same time. We are definitely one of the best tennis conferences in the nation.

• What do you want to be when you grow up? I’d love to work in Marketing and Public Relations. But I wouldn’t pass up a job in college sports.

• If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would it be and why? Jay Carney, he is the White House Press Secretary. I’ve always loved that job and if I was to go into politics, it would be my dream to do that.

• People may be surprised to know that ……All the names in my family start with the letter K. Even our pets.

• What’s currently playing on your I-Pod? “Mind Your Manners” by Chiddy Bang

• Do you have one coach and/or professor that has impacted your career the most at Allegheny? Jared Luteran, my Head Coach has definitely impacted me. He has taught me a lot about not just tennis but attention to details in life, which is something that I will use forever. He’s also helped me establish a good work ethic on the court and in the classroom. As far as Professors, Jim Bulman in our English department was my first experience with a college professor, and he was fantastic. He taught me what Allegheny was really about and how to make the most out of my time here. He was my advisor for my first year and a half, and the advice he gave me was gold.

• What would be your advice for someone that is considering enrolling as a student-athlete at a NCAA Div. III institution? Do it. It’s the best possible decision you could make. I’ve made lifelong friends on my team, developed great habits, and am doing something that I love to do. There isn’t much that beats competing for your school. I could not see myself not being a student-athlete.

• Who do you look up to? My Dad. He is one of the wisest people that I know.

• if you could excel at any competitive sport (other than your own) which would you choose? I’ve always wanted to play volleyball. I’ve always had fun playing it.

• Which historical sporting event would you have liked to witness? The 1993 Wild Card Playoff game between the Bills and the Oilers. You can’t beat great comebacks.

• What’s your favorite sports team/Who’s your favorite athlete? The Buffalo Bills are my favorite team, and my favorite athlete is Sam Querrey.

• My favorite sports memory is…? Playing at the National Tennis Center in New York City.

• Favorite ice cream? Chocolate Panda Paws.
NCAC Officehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06187444094756359287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4405654644420840936.post-32208929770677630362012-03-28T14:23:00.001-04:002012-03-28T14:23:57.416-04:00Call Me Maybe - Dueling WLAX Spring Break VideosThere's plenty of time on spring trips for teams to have a little fun.
Major: Economics

Sport: Swimming

I am originally from ... Oswego, New York

Why did you choose to attend a NCAA Division III institution? I decided to attend an NCAA Division III school because I wanted to be a major contributor in my sport while still earning a college degree from a great institution.

How would you describe the philosophy of NCAA Div. III? I would describe the philosophy of NCAA Div. III to be the place where true student-athletes study and compete, both at a high and competitive level.

How has your experience been in balancing athletics and academics at Denison? My coach tells my team that in order to be a successful student-athlete you need to have an appropriate balance of three aspects of your college career; academics, athletics and your social life. If one of these isn’t balanced, then the others will more than likely be unbalanced as well. I have tried my best to stay in a routine throughout college in order to make sure my academics, sport and social life are all equally weighed.

How would you best describe your normal day as a student-athlete at the NCAA Div. III level? What do you do all day? My day is VERY routine. I have morning workout at 6 am four days a week. After practice I go to class for a majority of the morning and early afternoon. Following classes I usually take a nap ( I depend on them!) and then head to afternoon practice. Once practice is over, I eat dinner and do homework before I go to bed around 11:00pm…..then repeat Monday-Friday!

Favorite thing about Denison? How beautiful it is. I love walking to class and looking at all the trees and pretty buildings. Denison is on top of a hill and I love driving up the main road to get to campus because it is so beautiful.

Favorite thing about the NCAC? I really like how all the NCAC schools have a great sense of sportsmanship.

What do you want to be when you grow up? When I “grow up” I would really like to work in the health care industry, either in hospital administration or medical sales. Right now, I am leaning towards Orthopedic Sales. I’ve always had a great interest in orthopedics and I think this would be a good career path for me.

People may be surprised to know that …… I grew up on a horse farm!

Do you have any hidden talents that very few people know about? I taught myself how to whistle, and I’m actually pretty good at it.

What has been your most memorable moment in athletics during your collegiate career? Some people would think that my most memorable moment would be at NCAA's last year when my 800 free relay broke the National Record; however, my most memorable moment was NCAA's my sophomore year. The 800 free relay that I was on was not expected to win, but we did. I remember swimming the last 100 of that race and seeing my whole team and crowd standing and cheering for us. I will always remember that feeling.

Do you have one coach and/or professor that has impacted your career the most at Denison? My coach Gregg Parini has definitely impacted my career at Denison. To say that he is just my swim coach is such an understatement. He has taught me so many valuable lessons that I plan to carry on throughout my life after my college career is over. I am so thankful to have met and been coached by a man like, Gregg.

What are the toughest issues facing Div. III athletes today? I think trying to prove to other people and divisions higher than ours that Div. III athletics are very competitive!

If you could excel at any competitive sport (other than your own) which would you choose? I would really like to try to play volleyball.

Which historical sporting event would you have liked to witness? The 2008, men's 4X100 freestyle swimming relay in Beijing. I remember I missed watching the race on TV so I watched it the next day on the computer, and I cried! That race was so inspirational.
Minors: Spanish & Chemistry

Sports: Cross Country & Track and Field

I am originally from ... Indianapolis

Why did you choose to attend a NCAA Division III institution? My decisions on choosing a college were based first upon academic reputation and rigor in preparing myself for medical school. Wabash fit all those requirements; the small school feel was what I wanted, with close faculty attention. Running has been an added bonus.

How would you describe the philosophy of NCAA Div. III? Athletics are part of the great balancing act that we as students juggle, and in Div III, the men and women who perform in these sports, despite being only participatory, at such a high level are motivated purely by the desire and the love of the game. Div III is athletics in perspective; it is the division of opportunity for one and all. In my mind, this makes it the best division because its focus is where it should be for most of us – as a supplement for our maturation and education.

How has your experience been in balancing athletics and academics at Wabash? I have rarely have problems balancing athletics and academics at Wabash. All classes are done by 4. Practice starts at 4:20, so right off the bat, there are reduced scheduling conflicts. If anything, athletics have kept me on the ball with my academics, because I am forced to have solid time management to succeed at both. Which I feel I have done decently.

How would you best describe your normal day as a student-athlete at the NCAA Div. III level? I.e. What do you do all day? Wake up early (6:30ish) to workout a little, have breakfast, then travel through a busy schedule of meetings (academic and non-academic; because at a small school, the opportunities for extra-curricular involvement and leadership are immense), classes, lunch and time to study. I am Head Resident Assistant, so I usually check my dormitory and my residents. I usually take a brief nap before practice. Head over to practice at about 4. Practice from 4:20 to usually 6:30 or so. Have dinner, and then from the time I finish dinner to the time I go to bed, which is around 11:30 or so, I will be studying or doing homework, with the occasional other few meetings.

Favorite thing about Wabash? The fact that Wabash is all-male. Its unique, it fosters a different culture here than any other school I have visited, and allows us to tailoring specifically to the maturation of average boys into exceptional young men. That I feel this college performs very well.

Favorite thing about the NCAC? That Depauw joined this past year. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the strength of this conference grow in distance running over the past couple years, especially up top. Adding Depauw, the enemies from the South, as much as I like competing against them, have added good competition to the mix.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I plan on becoming a doctor in primary medicine, working both abroad and in rural America.

If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would it be and why? Paul Farmer. He is an incredible doctor and founder of Partners in Health who is leading the charge in global health in many countries, including Haiti. I would like to see what the man thinks, what he does, his work saving the world.

People may be surprised to know that ... I would rather be farming right now.

If you are stranded on an island, you would like to be with … Les Stroud – survivalist and star in the show Survivorman.

What is the life of a student-athlete studying Biology like at Wabash? It’s a lot of work studying biology/pre-medicine and running at a high level. But so far, everything has been totally worth it.

What aspect of being a student-athlete at the Div. III level, do you hope to take with you into your professional life? The confidence that it has given me and maturation it has fostered in life.

What has been your most memorable moment in athletics during your collegiate career? Just recently, finally getting my XC All-American, 6th in the nation in DIII, just like my coach 15 years ago.

What would you like to accomplish, both in academics and athletics, before you graduate? In academics – pass my comprehensive exams and be home clear for medical school. In athletics – to be a national champ.

What’s currently playing on your I-Pod? I’m old school – I have an MP3

Do you have one coach and/or professor that has impacted your career the most at Wabash? Coach Roger Busch. The man has invested a lot in me and my future. I am forever indebted to him.

What is your most prized possession? My family

In your opinion, what is the most important life lesson you learned while competing at the NCAA Div. III level? The limits of the human body are dictated by the limits placed in the mind. The body will follow wherever the mind goes.

How many hours a week do you spend on Facebook? One hour. Tops. Don’t waste your time, America.

What would be your advice for someone that is considering enrolling as a student-athlete at a NCAA Div. III institution? Do it. And make sure that you stick it out in athletics. Find a good institution first, and make sure there is a program there that has a good track record for making students successful in athletics as well.

If you could be NCAC Commissioner for a day, what's the first thing you'd do? Petition for the 3000 meter race for Indoor Nationals. I think it is a huge jump for distance runners to compete in only 2 distance events indoors: the 1600m and the 5k. It does a disservice for many distance runners.

If you could excel at any competitive sport (other than your own) which would you choose? Soccer

What's the most impressive meal you've ever cooked? HaHa! I wish I could cook. I make good fried eggs.

If you were the president of NCAA Division III for a day, what's the first thing you'd do? Make sure that DIII Track standards stay time based – i.e. not heed to proposal to take only the top 16 individuals in each event and removing Auto and Provo marks. By removing the goal of auto-mark not only is there a loss of a focused goal for the athletes, but it places more stress on the athletes and coaches approaching championship season because one does not know whether the athlete will qualify until the Sunday before the championship. It does not reward fast times early, and will force athletes to compete the week before the meet, fighting for a fast times, when that can all be avoided by keeping the current system. If something isn’t broken – don’t fix it.NCAC Officehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06187444094756359287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4405654644420840936.post-41453194788491530952011-12-03T11:14:00.001-05:002011-12-08T12:08:56.045-05:00Five Minutes With ... The life of a sports management

business classes like accounting, economics, marketing management, etc., that
cause you to think about the financial aspect of sport but we also get to take
classes dedicated solely to the sports industry and the mental and
philosophical approach to athletics which I particularly enjoyed wanting to
head in the direction of coaching. Our professors encourage us to get hands on

and come back to win which made us feel special. But to be down 2-0 with 20
minutes left in the game, most teams would start to panic and get out of their
style but we did the opposite, we began to assert ourselves more and the goals
finally started coming. I will never forget that game.

sure he will be an ever better head coach in a few years wherever that may be.
The best thing about our coaching staff is that they never stop trying to get
I am originally from ... Copley, Ohio

Why did you choose to attend a NCAA Division III institution? I knew I wanted to play volleyball in college and I was looking for a smaller school with a good academic reputation. Division III seemed to be what I was looking for.

How would you describe the philosophy of NCAA Div. III? You are a true student-athlete in Division III. School comes first, and then sports.

How has your experience been in balancing athletics and academics at Wittenberg? I’ve had a fairly easy time balancing athletics and academics. All of my professors are really understanding when we have to miss class for volleyball. They are usually flexible and will let me make up tests at my convenience. My coach was also good at making sure we were getting our work done with activities like study tables and academic meetings.

How would you best describe your normal day as a student-athlete at the NCAA Div. III level? Wake up and go to class, then go to practice, come home and eat dinner then do homework.

Favorite thing about Wittenberg? The sense of community and the people.

Favorite thing about the NCAC? The schools are relatively close together so we don’t have to travel too far to play most matches.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I’m not exactly sure, but I know I want to do something in marketing or public relations.

People may be surprised to know that ... I am obsessed with Shaquille O’Neal.
What’s currently playing on your I-Pod? Amy MacDonald – This Is The Life

Do you have one coach and/or professor that has impacted your career the most at Wittenberg? My coach Paco Labrador. He is such a great coach and knows so much about the game of volleyball. He puts a lot of effort into what he does and it shows in all the success his teams have had. He has also taught me some really valuable life lessons over the last couple of years.
If you could excel at any competitive sport (other than your own) which would you choose? Soccer

Minors: Journalism and Spanish

Sport: Director of Tiger Sports Network

I am originally from ... Columbus, OH

Why did you choose to attend an NCAA Division III institution? I was recruited to play lacrosse.

How would you describe the philosophy of NCAA Div. III? It is what you make of it. There is not much of a national spotlight so you must love the game to put in the same time and effort that the bigger schools require without getting the exposure or scholarships. We just try to have fun.

How has your experience been in balancing broadcasting athletics and academics at Wittenberg? It has been a good experience. I really have learned how to organize my time. I’ve also had the chance to work with some real professionals, like Scott Leo, the voice of the Columbus Clippers. Our department chair, Dr. Matt Smith, is committed to giving us challenging work as well as the theoretical background in this field.

How would you best describe your normal day as a student-media member at the NCAA Div. III level? As the Director of the Tiger News Network and Torch (Student Paper) Sports Editor, I am in constant contact with Wittenberg athletes and the people who work with me to cover our university’s athletics. A normal day for me consists of sending emails to our sports writers and other members of our media team informing them of game times and also contacting athletes for information on upcoming and previously played events. I am also finishing my senior year and have class every day during the week so preparing for graduation takes up a lot of my time as well.

Favorite thing about Wittenberg? I really enjoy how competitive our sports teams are here at Wittenberg. It keeps our athletic events exciting and brings positive attention to our university.

Favorite thing about the NCAC? I like the rivalries between the schools affiliated with the NCAC. Wittenberg and Wooster have traditionally been big rivals but there are also rivalries within each individual sport, like Wabash for football or Ohio Wesleyan and Denison for lacrosse. These specific rivalries make each program exciting and interesting in its own way.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I am not totally sure what I would like to do after I graduate but I am interested in working with sports information for a major university. I have always had an interest in sports and I enjoy cover all types of athletics. I am looking for an opportunity to use my Wittenberg experience, preferably with a group that focuses on sports. My preference would be to do more of the behind the scenes producing, editing and directing. As the Student Director of Tiger News and the Torch Sports Editor, I’ve worked with a great team of professionals, faculty and other students. We’ve built up an internet following of parents and fans across the country and even started getting local sponsorship. I hope I can continue to build on my experience at another great college or broadcast network.

What has been your most memorable moment in athletic broadcasting during your collegiate career? The Wittenberg lacrosse team’s first win against Denison in April of 2010. The Tigers won 9-8 in OT.

What would you like to accomplish, both in academics and athletic broadcasting, before you graduate? I’ve tried to get an understanding of as many different forms of media as possible. I’d also like to build our program by adding more student staff to cover more sports and give Wittenberg student athletes and announcers wider exposure.

If you could be a superhero which special power would you choose to have? Super human strength

If you could excel at any competitive sport which would you choose? Football

Which historical sporting event would you have liked to witness? 2002 National Championship Game between Ohio State and Miami.

What’s your favorite sports team/Who’s your favorite athlete? The Dallas Cowboys/Emmitt Smith

Favorite hobbies outside work/school? Disc Golf, personal fitness, travel and, of course, watching great sports competitions!

First job? Paper boy

Favorite ice cream? Mint Chocolate Chip, from Graeter’s

Best/worst summer job? Worst: Shell Gas Station Attendant/Best: Country Club Life GuardNCAC Officehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06187444094756359287noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4405654644420840936.post-3595475097645273652011-09-28T15:38:00.000-04:002011-09-28T15:38:02.077-04:00Five Minutes With ... Title: Director of Athletics and Campus Wellness

Education: Bachelor's in history, Wabash; M.A. Athletic Administration, Wayne State

I am originally from ... Chesterton, Indiana.

Why do you have an awesome job? I interact with talented student-athletes, faculty, and staff on a daily basis. They are interested in a wide variety of things and that piques my interest. I try to give them the tools they need to be successful.

When did you know you wanted to be an athletic director? I earned my masters degree in 1981 rather early in my coaching career. Once I achieved that goal, I felt that at some point I would put it to use as an athletic director.

Favorite thing about Wabash? Wabash has great school spirit. It takes great pride in the accomplishments of its student-athletes. They are supported by the entire institution.

Favorite thing about the NCAC? It’s vital that conference members share the same educational values and philosophy. The NCAC member schools do share common values relative to education and athletics.

How would you describe the philosophy of NCAA Div. III? Students play intercollegiate sports because they want to. They play because they feel the experience is worthwhile to them. They do not play to entertain the rest of the campus. The learning is in the playing.

How did your collegiate experience help to prepare you to be an administrator at the Div. III level? I was able to succeed as a student-athlete at Wabash College. I have lived the experience first-hand as a Phi Beta Kappa graduate in history while playing three varsity sports: football, basketball, and baseball.

Why did you choose to work at a NCAA Division III institution? I enjoy the fact that you can have adult conversations with student-athletes at Division III institutions. You can discuss such things as study abroad experiences, internship experiences, service experiences, and classroom and lab experiences. It’s fun to watch young people grow and develop over a four year period to become leaders in their field.

What are the toughest issues facing Div. III athletes today? Too much to do and not enough time to do it. They have to be careful not to get over-extended. They can only do so much and still do it well.

If you could excel at any competitive sport which would you choose? Golf. Without question, golf is the best game to age with. It tests your physical tools, your judgment, and your emotions. And it does this in beautiful surroundings.

What’s your favorite sports team/Who’s your favorite athlete? My favorite sports team is the Indianapolis Colts. My favorite athlete of all- time in any sport is Walter Payton. He embodied all that is good about sports. I loved his work ethic.

Any Pet Peeves? I have a hard time with people who complain about a situation but offer no concrete ways to make it better. If you have a beef, tell me how to improve the situation.

Major: Communicationd

Sport: Men’s Basketball

I am originally from ... La Grange, Illinois

Why did you choose to attend a NCAA Division III institution? Basketball was definitely one of the reasons that I came to Denison, but I also liked the “family-like” atmosphere that it presented. It reminded me a lot of the high school I went to because it’s relatively small and you get to know pretty much everyone.

How would you describe the philosophy of NCAA Div. III? That’s kind of a tough question to answer. But from an athlete’s perspective, the D-III level contains some of the most hard-working and dedicated student-athletes that I’ve ever been around. It isn’t about the money or publicity to us; it’s about the love of the game and being a part of a team.

How has your experience been in balancing athletics and academics at Denison? Believe it or not, I actually think playing basketball in college has helped me academically. I always seem to do better in school while we are in-season because it forces me to make sure I get everything done ahead of time in case we have a long road trip or game the next day. When we aren’t in-season it’s really easy to procrastinate.

How would you best describe your normal day as a student-athlete at the NCAA Div. III level? I.e. What do you do all day? It’s a little different for me because I twist my ankles all the time so after classes I go down to the training room for treatment before practices and work-outs. Other than that I think it’s pretty much the same compared to what other student-athletes do. Go to class, eat as much as possible during the day to keep you going and get all your homework done at night after work-outs.

Favorite thing about Denison? My teammates.

Favorite thing about the NCAC? Tremendous competition. Anyone can beat anyone any night and that’s what makes it fun.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to get involved in Sports Media Relations or a related field but I’m mostly just concerned about getting a job when I get out of college.

If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would it be and why? Derrick Rose. I love that guy.

If you are stranded on an island, you would like to be with …… Carrie Underwood

What has been your most memorable moment in athletics during your collegiate career? Beating Wabash last year at our place. They were 15th in the nation at the time and Jim Leffew drained a 35-footer off the glass at the buzzer to beat them by three. That was such a good team that Wabash had last year so it meant a lot to us to beat them and I felt really good for Jim when he hit the shot because he’s been through so much in his career. Plus, he saved me after I committed a stupid foul at the end of the game so it was a combination between jubilation and relief for me that night.

What’s currently playing on your I-Pod? Bruce Springsteen

What would be your advice for someone that is considering enrolling as a student-athlete at a NCAA Div. III institution? First of all, don’t hesitate to do it. Playing basketball in college was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It really bugs me when people come up to me and ask “What’s the point of playing D-III? No one cares about it because it’s not D-1.” I’m not kidding – people have asked me that before. Make the decision to play, stick to it and then take in every moment. There aren’t that many people out there that can say they played a sport in college and the relationships that you develop with your teammates and coaches over the four years are priceless.

If you could excel at any competitive sport (other than your own) which would you choose? Baseball

Which historical sporting event would you have liked to witness? When the Cubs won the 1908 World Series. Every year they make me believe less and less that they’ll win one in my lifetime.

What’s your favorite sports team/Who’s your favorite athlete? Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls. And I’m really annoying about it too. Favorite athletes are Derrick Rose and Ryne Sandberg.

Any Pet Peeves? It really bothers me when broadcasters say “lacksadaisical” instead of “lackadaisical.” I’m looking at you, Billy Packer.NCAC Officehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06187444094756359287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4405654644420840936.post-23715471247991362112011-09-15T12:07:00.000-04:002011-09-15T12:09:16.202-04:00Five Minutes With ... But, working with the staff in Athletics, Recreation, Physical Education and the faculty and administrative leaders at Denison, is an honor.

When did you know you wanted to be a an Athletic Director? My passion is in leadership development. Being a Director of Athletics and Academic Chair is one forum in which I can put theory into practice.

Favorite thing about Denison? There are many. First and foremost, the students. They are curious. They have a thirst for knowledge. They question, they research, they question again. They are engaged. The faculty is advanced. They challenge the student and nurture simultaneously. It’s magic. They are incredible leaders completely dedicated to their professional growth and development in teaching, research and leadership in an effort to better serve the student. Like the Denison mission statement, the Division III “inspires and educates students to become autonomous thinkers, discerning moral agents and active citizens of a democratic society.”

Favorite thing about the NCAC? Its broad-based programming. Its philosophy of equity: athletically & academically

How would you describe the philosophy of NCAA Div. III level? Being a dual-sport athlete at Denison transformed me. I was exposed to some of the greatest mentors, role models, and teammates. It is not surprising that many of my teammates are in leadership positions and that my mentors have continued to grow and succeed in their own professions.

Which historical sporting event would you have liked to witness? The Harry Vardon vs. Francis Willmette Early 1900’s Golf Match.

What's the most impressive meal you've ever cooked? The only domestic quality I have is that I live in a house!

What’s your favorite sports team/Who’s your favorite athlete? Other than ALL OF THE DENISON TEAMS ... The Red Sox. Favorite athlete: Jackie Robinson

How has your experience been in making sure that student-athletes have a balance among athletics and academics at Denison? Much of the on-going balance can be attributed to the work of my predecessors, since I am a newcomer to this position. Larry Scheiderer is a tough act to follow, so I will choose, instead, to walk beside and hopefully continue to enhance the rich tradition of the past 20 years as well as the history of success that is deeply embedded in Denison athletics.

My leadership team is stellar. My Senior Associate Director is one of my mentors from my undergraduate years, Lynn Schweizer. My Associate Director is Sara Lee, one of the finest basketball coaches in the Division III - not only because she WINS games, but she is on the faculty, is an astute academic, and demonstrates the balance necessary to be successful each and every day. Filling out the TEAM is Assistant Director, Gregg Parini, who’s men’s swimming team won the 2011 National Championship after his 2001 Women’s Team captured the honor. So, leadership development doesn’t have to be “defined” at Denison, simply supported and enhanced.

Why did you choose to work at a NCAA Division III institution? There comes a point in time in one’s career in athletics where you find your identity. I teetered with other Divisions and realized that the Division III is my calling.

When you find your niche and you view it as the ultimate, you are much more able to thrive in your environment. If you are constantly looking for ‘more’ or ‘better’, you may miss the “prize”. I believe that the Division III is the quintessential athletics division in the NCAA. That belief carries me and challenges me to pursue excellence in all that we do, each and every day.

What did you do before this? I was a full professor of Physical Education, Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Ohio Wesleyan University. I also coached field hockey and was an athletic administrator for much of my career.

What do you do all day? My administrative assistant would say, “I go to meetings!!!” I did have 47 meetings from August 11 – September 13th. However, there is not enough room in this blog to talk about all of the details!!

If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would it be and why? Probably a chemistry professor. In an effort to be a successful athletics department, you need stellar leaders in many roles, but ultimate success comes from TEAM chemistry and I enjoy studying that phenomenon!!! :)

People may be surprised to know that ... I love to slalom water ski and continue to have the strength to do so.

If you are stranded on an island, you would like to be with ... My boys!!

Are there any major obstacles that you’ve had to overcome when dealing with Div. III athletics? Resources are probably most directors’ biggest challenge.

Do you have any hidden talents that very few people know about? I play the piano, I was in a rock band in high school (but who wasn’t if you lived in NJ!), I write limericks.

What has been your most memorable moment in your administrative career at your institution? In administration, seeing the growth and development of women’s programs since the 80’s.

Or over your entire career? As a coach, advancing to the Final Four of the National Tournament in basketball. We were competing with programs with more resources in terms of budgets and staffing, and there we were. Sitting on my bookshelf is a clay woman’s dress shoe. In side it reads: 2001 “Cinderella TEAM”. It’s a good looking trophy, for sure!

What are the toughest issues facing Div. III athletes today? I believe achieving balance. There is so much pressure to practice more; play longer; thrive in the classroom and be social human beings, with developing moral and ethical foundations. It is difficult to center oneself with all there is to experience through technology in our global society.

What’s currently playing on your I-Pod? Yikes: Bach, Beethoven, Black Eyed Peas, Pit Bull, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Usher and more…… OK, really? Yes!

What do you feel are the most rewarding aspects of being a college administrator at the Div. III level, and what may be some of the least rewarding aspects of the job? Most rewarding is creating an environment where your coaches & staff are working at an optimum level of motivation with the student’s interest at the forefront of their effort.

Most difficult: creating a long-range, strategic plan that will hold interest and include buy-in.

Least rewarding: having to say “No” more often than “Yes”!

What is your most prized possession? My Bible and…..my photos…………past and present.

What are some of the life lessons that you believe student athletes can learn by competing at the Div. III level? Athletics is a microcosm of our society. The skills learned through athletic competition are all transferable, ie: discipline, persistence, self-awareness, emotional control, following a plan, agony and ecstasy of winning or losing the close contest, leadership, team/group productivity.

What would be your advice for someone that is considering enrolling as a student-athlete at a NCAA Div. III institution? You can do it all, if you are creative with your time. ‘Time Management” is an overused term, as is 'balance'. It is really about creatively carving your time and interests at a given time in your development, physically and cognitively.

If you could be NCAC Commissioner for a day, what's the first thing you'd do? Recognize Dennis Collins by demonstrating the ideals and vision he had for the conference. I would also create an award for Keri Alexander Luchowski…..it would be the “unsung hero” award for patience, persistence, and the vision to follow a plan!

If you could excel at any competitive sport (other than your own) which would you choose? Quidditch

My favorite sports memory is … As a player, winning the South Jersey Championship in Field Hockey in 1976!!

As a coach, advancing to the Final Four in 2001.

As an administrator, observing four national championships: one in men’s basketball in 1988; three in men’s and women’s soccer. …all at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Any Pet Peeves? Negative attitudes + negative lateral communication = negative energy!

Best/worst summer job? Being a dental assistant in my Dad’s dental office. In the 70’s, we didn’t use latex gloves (the worst part)!

Realizing that “psychology” was fundamental to Dentistry ... no one REALLY ever wants to go to the dentist and people in pain are not at their best. I enjoyed realizing that challenging environment (the best part!).

And it’s nothing like that TV show. Trust me.

Why do you have an awesome job? I get to help shape and direct a wonderful old university and connect to its students, faculty and alumni. There has not been a single day in this position where I haven’t been amazed. I have never felt more engaged in anything in my life.

When did you know you wanted to be a college president? I don’t think anyone really plans on being a college president. But when I was in graduate school (getting my PHD in History) I do remember being interested in what the President was up to. I believe that leadership matters and I remember early interest in the leadership styles of presidents.

Favorite thing about DePauw? The energy of the students and the faculty – and the ways in which members of this community support and nurture each other. And, surprisingly, the wit of the members of the community. There are an incredible number of very smart, very witty and entertaining members of this community.

Favorite thing about the NCAC? The academic quality of the member institutions.

How would you describe the philosophy of NCAA Div. III? The classic model of the student-athlete engaged in sport for the love of the game and the pure thrill of the challenge. Div III athletes are as intense as any athletes I have ever seen, but they also have their eyes on other things.

How did your collegiate experience help to prepare you to be an administrator at the Div. III level? Well, I was captain of the varsity swimming team at Notre Dame and competed at a pretty high level all four years. I know how challenging it is for our student athletes to balance the demands of the classroom and the playing fields. I also know how emotionally taxing it is when you lose. I hope I am sympathetic about all they are addressing every day.

People may be surprised to know that ... I still swim every day, very often dropping in on the workouts of the DePauw swimmers. I still keep trying to get better at my sport.

What’s currently playing on your I-Pod? Lots of jazz. And a surprising number of musical “guilty pleasures” – those pop songs that you don’t want to admit you download.

Which historical sporting event would you have liked to witness? The two great McEnroe-Borg Wimbledon finals of 1980 and 1981. There is something so immediate and exciting about two athletes engaged in such a battle of contrasting styles and temperaments.

What’s your favorite sports team/Who’s your favorite athlete? I’m a huge fan of the New York Yankees. My favorite athlete right now is Ryan Lochte, Olympic swimmer, who dominated Michael Phelps at the last swimming world championships. The battles between Phelps and Lochte in London will be epic.

First job? Lifeguarding on the Jersey Shore. It’s remarkable how powerful you can feel to be 16 on a lifeguard stand with a whistle.
• Why did you choose to work at the NCAA Division III level?

BB: After competing and earning my undergraduate education at an NCAA Div. III institution, I immediately knew that I wanted to pursue a career at that level. The purity of the athletic competition combined with the academic excellence that so many of the student-athletes possess at this level is what drives me to continue to be a part of the division in my professional career.

• If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would it be and why?

BB: Don Hunsinger… Is there really an explanation needed?

• How would you most accurately describe or define the ideals on which the NCAA Div. III was founded?

BB: The division provides student-athletes the ability to be just that, students first and athletes second. Often times the best stories connected to division III student-athletes have little to do with their achievements on the field, but rather their contributions and successes within the community and the academic world.

• People may be surprised to know that ……

BB: My favorite NFL team is the Miami Dolphins….Although born and raised in the Cleveland area, I have never been and will never be a fan of the Browns.

• Are there any major obstacles that you’ve had to overcome when dealing with Div. III athletics?

BB: I think one of the toughest challenges in working in division III athletics is educating the general public on how we are structured and operate. Instead of looking at Div. III as a well-balanced opportunity for recent high school graduates to continue their athletic and academic careers, many people view it as a “step down” from Div. I and II institutions.

• Do you have any hidden talents that very few people know about?

BB: If I had any unique talents, I surely wouldn’t keep them hidden. So, I guess the answer is NO.

• How did your collegiate experience help to prepare you to be an administrator at the Div. III level?

BB: Being a former Div. III student-athlete, I’m able to relate with the issues and concerns that many of our current student-athletes continue to face on a day-to-day basis.

• If you are stranded on an island, you would like to be with ……

BB: Don Hunsinger, Bear Grylls and Macgyver....I wouldn't have to do anything to contribute to the survival efforts.

• What has been your most memorable moment in your administrative career?

BB: Well it hasn’t been a very long administrative career, but it has been a rewarding experience to be accepted into an administrative role at the conference office at such a young age.

• What are the toughest issues facing Div. III athletes in today’s world?

BB: Athletic burnout. Children are being forced into competitive athletic environments at such a young age, and by the time they get to college they are burned out and have little desire to continue competing.

• What’s currently playing on your I-Pod?

BB: I have my “Walkman” tuned to country at all times!!!

• What are some of the life lessons that you believe student-athletes can learn by competing at the Div. III level?

BB: The ability to have balance in life is a valuable trait, and there is no doubt in my mind that Div. III student-athletes learn to develop this trait from the very first day they step foot on campus.

• What would be your advice for someone that is considering enrolling as a student-athlete at a NCAA Div. III institution?

BB: I would recommend that anyone with the opportunity to do so, DO IT.

• How would you best describe your normal day as an administrator at the Div. III level?

BB: I don’t think the word “normal day” and athletics administration really go hand-in-hand. Some days you can be staring at schedules for eight hours, while the very next day you're out at a field handing out a trophy at a championship game. The most normal part of my day-to-day work is that in some shape or form, no matter what I am doing, I am contributing to the numerous outstanding student-athletes that make up the NCAC.

NCAC Officehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06187444094756359287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4405654644420840936.post-79870968822746868702011-06-24T08:52:00.004-04:002011-06-29T09:54:59.746-04:00Five Minutes With ...Name: Keri Alexander Luchowski

Institution: North Coast Athletic Conference

Title: Executive Director

Education: Masters in Sport Management, Kent State University; Bachelors in Professional Writing, Wheeling Jesuit University

• Why did you choose to work in NCAA Division III?

KAL: I have worked in various levels of sport throughout my career, but have really chosen to make Division III my home because I identify with the ideas of balance and sportsmanship among others in the Division’s philosophy. I can relate to the passion our students bring to everything they fill their lives with, both academically and athletically.

• If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would it be and why?

KAL: Mark Recchi, so I could know what it feels like to hoist a Stanley Cup.

• People may be surprised to know that ……

KAL: A lot of people probably know I played soccer in college, but most would be surprised that I was a swimmer and a soccer player when I was in high school.

• How has your experience been in making sure that student-athletes have a proper balance among athletics and academics in the Conference?

KAL: The idea of balance is one that, while not expressly stated in our philosophy, guides our every decision. We continually look to the experience students have and strive to allow them the most space to explore and learn both in academics and athletics. For me, it is a wonderful experience to see when we succeed in reaching that goal.

• Do you have any hidden talents that very few people know about?

KAL: I am an excellent cook, if I do say so myself!

• How did your collegiate experience help to prepare you to be an administrator at the Div. III level?

KAL: Without my experience as a student-athlete, I would not be nearly as effective an administrator today. I learned so much during those years, both in the classroom and in all of the different roles I was encouraged to try on. I learned how to better manage my time, how to prioritize, how to work well with others. I was incredibly lucky that my sport led me to the place that was a perfect fit for me. I would wish my experience for anyone hoping to get the most out of college.

• What’s currently playing on your I-Pod?

KAL: A random mix: Pink, Rod Stewart, Rick Springfield, Pete Townshend, Maroon 5, Simple Plan, Foo Fighters

• What do you feel are the most rewarding aspects of being a college administrator at the Div. III level, and what may be some of the least rewarding aspects of the job?

KAL: The absolute most rewarding thing about being at the NCAC is working with our student-athletes. Seeing how hard they work; seeing how gracefully they deal when things don’t quite go according to plan; seeing what they accomplish. It’s inspiring.

• What are some of the life lessons that you believe student athletes can learn by competing at the Div. III level?

KAL: How to prioritize, time management, teamwork, how to set goals and then how to plan to reach those goals successfully

• How would you best describe your normal day as an administrator at the Div. III level?

KAL: What I like best is that there is no “normal” day. As part of a conference office, I have different opportunities every day. I can work on a future schedule, help someone navigate NCAA legislation and hand out a trophy all in the same day! I spoke at a career day recently and some students were disappointed in how much of my job is done behind a desk. But what we do is so different every day that the “desk” part of the job is just as interesting and challenging as the “games” part of my job is fun.NCAC Officehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06187444094756359287noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4405654644420840936.post-66125079930545311112011-05-03T12:48:00.000-04:002011-05-03T12:49:50.474-04:00Sundt's Scribes: Chris Broussard '90In this edition of Sundt’s Scribes, <dfn style="font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; ">Hal Sundt</dfn> details the journey of how former Yeomen hoopster and currently NBA Analyst for ESPN Chris Broussard went from a young and aspiring journalist at Oberlin College to main the stage of ESPN’s studios.

“How long do you think you need?” asks Chris Broussard, his voice muffled from what I can only guess is the splatter of rain smacking against the windshield of his car as he makes his way to the ESPN Studios in Bristol, Connecticut.

“Let me call you back in about 10 or 15 minutes,” Broussard then casually says. “And then I’ll give you the time.”

On this day, Wednesday, April 27th, Chris Broussard is a busy man. III level. We hope that this feature will help people gain a better understanding of why individuals have decided to make NCAA Div. III a cornerstone of their life.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Patrick Fritz

Hometown/High School: Brookville, PA/Brookville

Institution: Allegheny College

Major (s): Communication Arts – Broadcast Journalism
Minor: Psychology

Sport: Men’s Golf

• Why did you choose to attend a NCAA Division III institution?

PF: I wanted a mix between a great education and the ability to play golf at the NCAA level. With Allegheny’s small class sizes and great golf program it was everything I was looking for.

• If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would it be and why?

PF: Dick Vitale. As a broadcast journalism major, I would love be on TV and be able to talk about something I love as my job. I love his enthusiasm for college basketball and he gets some fantastic opportunities.

• How would you most accurately describe or define the ideals on which the NCAA Div. III was founded?

PF: Students participating athletically for the love of the sport. As Division III athletes we are not influenced by other factors such as money, so we get to go out every day and compete to reflect our institutions for the love of the game.

• People may be surprised to know that ……

PF: I have been participating in Theater productions longer than I have been playing golf competitively.

• How has your experience been in balancing athletics and academics at Allegheny College?

PF: Allegheny has great resources that help students with balancing their studies with other activities they may be involved in. At first, I struggled balancing my athletics with my studies, but my teammates, coach and professors taught how to maximize my time and effort.

• If you are stranded on an island, you would like to be with ……

PF: My golf clubs

• What is the life of a student-athlete studying broadcast journalism like at Allegheny College?

PF: The professors in our Communications department are very supportive of athletics and are always interested in how I’m doing. Also, being a varsity athlete at such a small school allows professors to get to know me so when athletic communication internships are available professors think of athletes they have in class.

• Do you have any hidden talents that very few people know about?

PF: No. Only my musical talents, but most people know that by now.

• What aspect of being a student-athlete at the Div. III level, do you hope to take with you into your professional life?

PF: If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. I never dread going to practice because I love what I do and I don’t let other things influence me. In my professional life, I hope I have a job that I love doing so I love going to work every day.

• What has been your most memorable moment in athletics during your collegiate career?

PF: Playing well my last round of qualifying my freshman year to make the starting squad.

• What would you like to accomplish, both in academics and athletics, before you graduate?

PF: Academically, I would like to improve the Communications Department in a way that students after me have even more opportunities than I had. Athletically, I want to help my team win a NCAC Championship and participate at Nationals.

• What’s currently playing on your I-Pod?

PF: "Better Than" by John Butler Trio

• Do you have one coach and or professor in mind that has impacted your career the most at Allegheny College?

PF: Coach Jeff Groff, the head golf coach, has taught me a lot in the two years I have been at Allegheny. He not only wants us to be successful on the golf course but also in life. He always wants the best for us and takes his job very seriously.

• What is your most prized possession?

PF: My golf clubs

• In your opinion, what is the most important life lesson you learned while competing at the NCAA Div. III level

PF: Like I said before, do what you love and love what you do. I feel like I wouldn’t have continued to love the game as I do if I would’ve went to another school.

• How many hours a week do you spend on Facebook?

PF: 2 hours

• What would be your advice for someone that is considering enrolling as a student-athlete at a NCAA Div. III institution?

PF: I would tell them it’s worth it. Being a student-athlete at a Div. III institution is an incredibly rewarding experience and you will grow more as a person at an institution like this more than at a Div. I or Div. II school.

• How would you best describe your normal day as a student-athlete at the NCAA Div. III level?

PF: Hectic. Every minute of my week is scheduled between class, practice, homework, friends and other extra-carricular activities. I am always moving.

NCAC Officehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06187444094756359287noreply@blogger.com0
