Coaching Legend Impresses Denison Class, Basketball Team

Discussion of great coaches is often a topic of study in Bob Ghiloni's history and philosophy of sports and physical education class at Denison. Ghiloni, the Big Red's head men's basketball coach, and his class had the opportunity this week to talk not just about, but TO, one of the greatest coaches of all time, the legendary John Wooden.

Ghiloni's class, members of the basketball team and other friends participated in a 30-minute confernce call with the 98-year-old Hall of Fame coach. Wooden answered a number of questions from Ghiloni and the students and touched on several subjects regarding college and professional basketball, including whether his system -- one that netted an unprecedented 10 NCAA championships and 620 wins at UCLA -- would work in today's game.

The call was set up by the father of Denison freshman tennis player Sarah Short. Her father's business has a connection with Wooden's agent, and he talked to Ghiloni during the fall about setting up a call for his class.

Read about the call in Josh Hachat's story in the Newark Advocate.
