Five Minutes With ... Travis Wall

Ohio Wesleyan senior men's soccer player Travis Wall
Name: Travis Wall

Hometown/High School: Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington

Institution: Ohio Wesleyan University

Major: Sports Management

Sport: Soccer

I am originally from ... Columbus, Ohio

Why did you choose to attend a NCAA Division III institution?
I chose to attend OWU because I knew that a Division III experience offered up the best combination of academics and athletics than any other school I could have found. Also, playing for Jay Martin was a huge factor in coming here.

How would you describe the philosophy of NCAA Div. III?
I think the philosophy is academics first with athletics a very close second. If there is a conflict though, academics always come first and I think that is an important message to get across.

How has your experience been in balancing athletics and academics at (your school)?
My experience has been great. When we have to miss classes for games, the professors have always been very accommodating and worked with me to help make up the work or notes I missed.

How would you best describe your normal day as a student-athlete at the NCAA Div. III level? I.e. What do you do all day?
I wake up at 8 a.m. to get ready for my 9 a.m. class. I go to two of my classes, then go to lunch with the soccer team. After lunch I go to my last class at 1 p.m. Following that I will hang out in the coaches office with other members of the team or I will head home to try and catch a quick nap before our 4 p.m. practices that we have every day.

Favorite thing about Ohio Wesleyan?
Playing soccer for Jay Martin and the academic reputation that comes attached with a degree from Ohio Wesleyan.

Favorite thing about the NCAC?
The competitiveness of it

What do you want to be when you grow up?
I would like to be a college athletic director or a college head soccer coach.

If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would it be and why?
I would love to be Larry David for a day. Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm are my two all time favorite shows and Larry David is the comedic genius behind each one. I think his outlook on everyday awkward situations is hilarious, I often times find myself telling somebody that “that was a Larry David moment” or “I’ve seen this in Seinfeld” because he covers just about all there is to cover in everyday occurrences.

People may be surprised to know that …
My mom went to Denison. I am the youngest of three children and we all chose Ohio Wesleyan to go to school and play soccer. My mom has been pretty happy cheering us on over the years though.

If you are stranded on an island, you would like to be with …
Natalie Portman. I think she is the best looking woman on this planet.

What is the life of a student-athlete studying sports management like at Ohio Wesleyan?
The life of a sports management major at OWU is an interesting one. You get a really nice mix of taking business classes like accounting, economics, marketing management, etc., that cause you to think about the financial aspect of sport but we also get to take classes dedicated solely to the sports industry and the mental and philosophical approach to athletics which I particularly enjoyed wanting to head in the direction of coaching. Our professors encourage us to get hands on experience before entering the real world so next semester I am scheduled for two internships, one with the Columbus Crew and one with a local soccer club and I am really looking forward to those.

Do you have any hidden talents that very few people know about?
I can quote movies and TV shows better than most people. My friends and I at OWU consistently relate every day happenings to movies we have seen and try to quote those movies.
I also have an annoyingly bad habit of remembering the slightest details about any team we have ever player. Whether it be an opponent’s stats, the cleats he wore, his hometown, his number….you name it I most likely have it memorized.

What aspect of being a student-athlete at the Div. III level, do you hope to take with you into your professional life?
I think playing at a Division III level has taught me to prioritize. In life, my working career will come before any athletic interest I will have and I think going to OWU has just helped reinforce that.

What has been your most memorable moment in athletics during your collegiate career?
Although it just happened, I will never forget this years comeback against Ohio Northern in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament and the goal I scored to win the game. Jay told us after the game that he has never coached a team who has been down 2-0 in and NCAA game and come back to win which made us feel special. But to be down 2-0 with 20 minutes left in the game, most teams would start to panic and get out of their style but we did the opposite, we began to assert ourselves more and the goals finally started coming. I will never forget that game.

What would you like to accomplish, both in academics and athletics, before you graduate?
I would like to graduate with a cumulative GPA of above 3.2. I am currently at a 3.19 so I am close. In athletics, before it was to make a final 4, now that we have done that, I think it would be great to win the whole thing!

What’s currently playing on your I-Pod?
Drake’s new Take Care album

Do you have one coach and/or professor that has impacted your career the most at Ohio Wesleyan?
Jay Martin. It doesn’t get much better than playing for him. OWU has been spoiled to have him here for 35 years. Our assistant Brandon Bianco is a close second. He was a first year coach my freshman year and in 4 years, he has turned into a great coach. I’m sure he will be an ever better head coach in a few years wherever that may be. The best thing about our coaching staff is that they never stop trying to get better. It would be easy for people in their position to sit back and be content with their careers and this season but they are always striving to get better which is their most admirable quality.

In your opinion, what is the most important life lesson you learned while competing at the NCAA Div. III level?
Academics > athletics

How many hours a week do you spend on Facebook?

What would be your advice for someone that is considering enrolling as a student-athlete at a NCAA Div. III institution?

Do it, the lessons you learn are more rewarding than you could imagine.

Who do you look up to?
As a role model in life, my dad. As a coach for who I would like to emulate when I am older, I would have to say University of Akron head coach Caleb Porter. He is so confident in everything he does and he plays soccer the way it is suppose to be played.

If you could excel at any competitive sport (other than your own) which would you choose?

Basketball

Which historical sporting event would you have liked to witness?
Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier.

What's the most impressive meal you've ever cooked?
Ramen Noodles

What’s your favorite sports team/Who’s your favorite athlete?
My favorite sports team is Ohio State in every single sport. My favorite athlete in the world is Leo Messi

My favorite sports memory is…?
Sweet 16 win vs ONU in 2011

Any Pet Peeves?
When people end sentences with “and yeah…..” or “sooo….”

Favorite hobbies outside work/school?
Family time

First job?
Paper boy for the SNP Upper Arlington News.

Favorite ice cream?
Coffee

OWU's Martin To Be Inducted Into Ohio Soccer Hall Of Fame

Ohio Wesleyan’s 34-year head men’s soccer coach Jay Martin will be inducted into the Ohio Soccer Hall of Fame on September 18th at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.

Martin will be joined by Chanka (Ken) Baldeosingh, Carl Del Corral, John Gyekenyesi, James McDowell, Al O’Campo (posthumous), Blaz Pesorda, Chris Rolfe and Kalman Toth as the fourth class to be inducted into the Hall.

Martin, who was named the NSCAA national Coach of the Year in 1991 and 1998, is the winningest active coach in NCAA Division III with an .814 winning percentage, collecting 566 wins in 33 seasons. He is also fourth on the all-divisions, all-time wins list.

He helped guide the 1998 Battling Bishops to the NCAA Div. III title to go along with two runner-up finishes and seven semifinal appearances. OWU has won 12 regional titles under Martin’s direction, including nine in the last 15 seasons. The Bishops also hold NCAA records in playoff appearances (31) and playoff victories (51).

Among Martin’s most distinguished feats at OWU lies his streak of consecutive playoff appearances, which reached 18-consecutive seasons (1978-95). Martin has also guided the Bishops to 21 conference titles.

In the midst of the Bishops’ impressive playoff streak, Martin and the OWU men’s soccer team were the most dominant team in the country during the 1980’s regardless of division as they compiled an .815 winning percentage.

Martin became the fastest coach in college history to reach the 500-win plateau after reaching the feat in the 2005 season. He is one of only seven college coaches to eclipse 500 career victories.

In addition to his numerous coaching accolades, Martin also served as the president of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and served a six-year term on the NCAA Div. III selection committee, serving as the committee chair for four of those seasons. Martin has also served as a color analyst for the Columbus Crew of the MLS for the past nine seasons.

According to the Ohio Soccer Hall of Fame website, coaches must meet the following criteria in order to receive consideration: Shall be those who have served the soccer community in a coaching capacity over an extended period of time, exhibiting exceptional coaching and teaching ability, as well as coaching success at the League and State Level, as well as, instructing others involved in coaching. Candidates should also have contributed to the promotion and growth of a positive image for soccer and its programs.

Blog Updates

** Follow the Wabash soccer team in Argentina here. The team leaves today.

** An update on the OWU swimmers who were attempting a relay crossing of the English Channel: The relay effort turned into a solo attempt after the British government denied Usman Javaid's request for the visa that would let him enter the country. After Javaid’s visa was denied, David Gatz made the decision to attempt a solo channel swim to fulfill the mission of their Channeling Peace Initiative. He began his swim at about 3:30 a.m. EDT Monday (8:30 a.m. BST/British Summer Time), but was forced to abandon the effort about four hours later after becoming ill and unable to keep down either food or water. Gatz hopes to participate in a separate relay swim in the English Channel later this week, and Javaid, a gold medal swimmer in Pakistan, is planning his own long-distance swim there. Wabash Soccer Headed to Argentina

Wabash soccer is headed south for the summer. Well, the end of summer, technically. The team leaves Tuesday for Buenos Aires. The trip has been planned ever since Head Coach Roberto Giannini became the Little Giant skipper three years ago.

The Little Giants will tour Buenos Aires and La Plata, the capital city of the province of Buenos Aires, on their first day. On their second day, they will play against the famed Boca Juniors. Sightseeing follows over the next two days before an Aug. 10 match against Estudiantes.

The trip, the first for some to South America, or even out of the United States, will also feature a visit to Uruguay and a tour of Colonia. After playing Independiente Aug. 13, the Little Giants will spend one more day in Buenos Aires touring and shopping before going to see a professional soccer match Aug. 15.

The timing is excellent to see some of the best professional soccer in the world, as the Wabash players and coaches arrive for the beginning of spring in Argentina - the first weekend of the countries’ professional soccer league. The Little Giant crew will see at least one — maybe two — professional games at La Bombonera stadium, which seats 120,000 fans. Wabash players will practice at the stadium for four days and will be helped by league professional coaches.

The team will blog their trip once they arrive in South America.

Push Me, Pull Me: Collaboration and Competition in Art, Sports and Life

Musicians and athletes certainly confront the necessity of collaboration, striving to work together to produce a result that is greater than the sum of its parts. These same performers face competition, as well, as they endeavor to perform at their own highest level. A similar tension can be found in classroom situations, in the work force, in interpersonal relationships and on a biological and evolutionary level.

In order to explore this concept, the Oberlin Heisman Club will host its second annual spring symposium - Push Me, Pull Me: Collaboration and Competition in Art, Sports and Life on Saturday, March 1 from 11a.m. to 3 p.m., in Craig Lecture Hall.

The lead speaker is Timothy Weiss, the Ruth Strickland Gardner professor of music and an associate professor of conducting in the Conservatory. He will speak about challenges facing performers of all types when it comes to collaboration and competition.

A panel discussion will follow. Participants on the panel will include:
Blake New (Head Men’s Soccer Coach),
Nusha Martynuk (Professor of Dance),
Peter Slowik (Professor of Viola, Oberlin Conservatory)
Cameron Leverett, ‘06 (Life Insurance Underwriter and Corporal and COC Watch Chief, US Marine Corps Reserve).

George Smith '87, a bureau reporter for ESPN news, will moderate the discussion, as he did last year. The panel will explore the concepts of collaboration and competition as they apply to their individual areas of expertise and experience.

The symposium is one of the ways the Heisman Club is expanding its efforts beyond athletics, into the broader Oberlin community. Historically an athletic booster club of sorts, the Heisman Club was founded in 1978 with the objective of strengthening Oberlin’s athletic program. Through the years, the club has funded major capital improvements, sponsored awards programs for athletes, and provided general financial support to the athletics department and coaches.

Along with Athletic Director, Joe Karlgaard, the Club now believes the Athletic Department should promote wellness, general fitness, active lifestyles, and lifetime sports, as well as varsity and intramural sports. Furthermore, the Oberlin community is teaming with performers in many arenas: on the playing fields, in the labs and classrooms, in the Conservatory, in Warner and Hales gyms, and so on. The efforts of the Heisman Club now include helping those performers discover and appreciate their common goals.

Lunch will be served. The program will conclude at 3 pm.

Around the NCAC

** Denison senior midfielder Read Powell has been named to the 2007 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Senior All-Star team. She is the lone representative of the North Coast Athletic Conference in the game set for Saturday, November 17 at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa. Game time is 9:30 a.m.
** Kenyon freshman Lauren Brady was named CollegeSwimming.com's National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week in Division III after clearing the the NCAA Division III 'B' cut for national championship qualifying with her times in the 100 and 200 butterflies in the Ladies' first dual meets of the season versus Ohio State University and Ohio University on October 27th. Earlier, the morning of the swim meet, Brady finished second in the NCAC Women's Cross Country Championships.

** Former Oberlin soccer player Ross Myers is finding his place on the Division I squad at Columbia.

** D3football.com has named several NCAC athletes to their Team of the Week over the past two weeks. The Denison offensive line earned recognition after helping the Big Red rushing attack pile up 418 yards off 56 carries and leading three runners to 100-yard rushing days in a 51-41 win over Kenyon two weeks ago. Ohio Wesleyan senior linebacker Chad Ellis was also honored after he intercepted an Allegheny pass, setting up what proved to be the game-winning touchdown. His second interception, coming in the fourth quarter with less than four minutes to play, preserved the 17-10 Battling Bishop win over the Gators. Ellis also had 12 tackles (seven solo), four tackles for a loss, and two sacks. This past week, Wooster sophomore Bryan Albani posted three interceptions in the Fighting Scots' 66-14 win over Earlham. All three of Albani's interceptions came during the first half, as he returned the first 55 yards for a touchdown and the other two gave Wooster's offense a short field to work with and also resulted in touchdowns.

** Ohio Wesleyan team managers Ashlie Talbot and Kristina Fitch are profiled in the latest issue of Connect2 OWU.
