April will be busier than usual for Denison Strength & Conditioning. In addition to the usual bustle of spring sports contests and fall sport athletes in out-of-season training, the department is offering several fundraisers and clinics:
Bench Press to beat Breast Cancer
Friday, April 3 @ 7:00 in the Mitchell Center
This is the fifth annual competition and is held in conjunction with the Relay for Life. It is free and open to the public. Contestants will bench press any of the following weights for as may reps as possible: 45 lbs, 65 lbs, 95 lbs, 135 lbs, 185 lbs or 225 lbs. Any contestant who makes a donation of over $15 will receive a complimentary t-shirt and winners of each weight class will be given a coupon good for a free Chipotle burrito.
3rd Annual Central Ohio Strength & Conditioning Clinic
Saturday, April 18 @ 8:00 - 5:30 pm in the Burton Morgan Center
Clinic Manual & Refreshments Included. Sessions cover a variety of topics, including: Stress Fractures in the High School Athlete: Prevention and Risk Factors, Shoulder Functional Strength Training - Thinking Outside the Box and Staying on a Budget and Dynamic Warm-Up for All Athletes. A complete list of speakers is included in the link above. A tour of the Denison facilities will also be provided. The cost for the first coach from an organization is $50 (by April 1st). The fee for each additional coach from the same organization is $25 (by April 1st). Admission is free with a College ID.
Injury Prevention for the Female Athlete Free Seminar
Saturday, April 18 @ 4:30-6:00 pm in the Memorial Fieldhouse
What all female athletes, their parents and coaches need to know reduce the chance of injuries. Topics include: the factors that make female athletes susceptible to ACL and other injuries, and specific drills & exercises that coaches and athletes can incorporate in to their practices and training to reduce the chance of injuries. Admission is free.
Joe Torrens Memorial Team Strongman Competition
Saturday, April 25 @ 12:30pm in the Mitchell Center
Teams consisting of five competitors, one for each weight class, will compete in three divisions: Collegiate Division: All team members must be currently enrolled as full-time students of their respective college or university, Women's Division: Open to all female competitors (No weight classes), Open Division: Open to any competitors not affiliated with a college or university. The entry fee is $120 per team and all proceeds will benefit the Joseph Edward Torrens Memorial Fund.
